College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Welcome to the Allan Hancock College Testing Center! Many kinds of tests are administered at the college, including the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP). CLEP is a series of examinations in 34 introductory college subjects that allow individuals to earn college credit for what they already know regardless of how that knowledge was acquired – through advanced course work, independent study, work experience, professional development, or extracurricular activities. It is beneficial if you are only a few credits short of meeting graduation requirements. CLEP exams require college-level knowledge and critical thinking ability, and sufficient preparation is required to do well. CLEP exam-takers are high-achieving students and independent learners who are motivated. There are four subject areas of exams: composition and literature, science and mathematics, foreign languages, history and sciences, and business. With the exception of the English Composition with Essay, the tests are composed primarily of multiple-choice questions. Some math exams include fill-in type questions. It is your responsibility to contact other colleges to determine what CLEP scores they accept. If you would like to use a CLEP exam in place of an Allan Hancock College course to meet a specific degree or certificate requirement, you will need departmental approval. See an Allan Hancock College counselor for a course waiver form.
